Definition: The feeling or attitude the author gives to the reader. Mainly moods. This usually helps convey the theme of the story.
Example: Into Thin Air by Jon Kraukauer, "...attempting to climb Everest is an intrinsically irrational act-a triumph of desire over sensibility...The plain truth is that I knew better but went to Everest anyway. And in doing so I wasa party to the death of good people, which is something that is apt to remain on my conscience for a very long time." pg XIII.
This example shows the tone the author sets at the beginning of the story. The tone comes of as sorrowful but respectful to the loss of those on Mount Everest. This helps us figure out the lesson or theme of the story and what the author is trying to get
