Poem Comparison: Barbie, Ken, And Allan

In my opinion, I feel as though she symbolizes a life she experienced or grew up in, in the form of Barbie, Ken, and Allen. She gives each doll their own persona; Barbie wanting the dream life and dream husband that everyone wants, but instead she settles for Alan who is a drunk and does nothing. However, she makes it sound as though Barbie does not like the feeling of not having someone, so she continues to be with Alan, hoping he will become better and maybe more successful. One of the biggest strengths of this poem is how people can relate to this in different ways. People can either relate because they know someone like this, or has been through this. She wanted the dream husband and life that included the nice house and nice cars. Towards the end of the poem she discusses how Alan was a bum with no job or car that would sit around, smoke, and drink. She says that Barbie would plea about a “giant hand” used to make him stand and walk, meaning where was the drive to make him get up and do thing instead of sitting around doing nothing. I can relate to that because I have had my fair share of experiences with people who would not want to do anything and just sit around and I feel as though everyone knows or has known at least one person like that. In this poem, it is as if Barbie was the one making all the money and he would use it do drink, smoke, and waste away. One strength is that so many people can relate to different parts of this poem or all the poem. I knew an individual that used to work and one day quit. He would drink and smoke all day, every day, and would sit around complaining about losing money, so this poem speaks to me. The one thing I don’t understand is if she wasn’t that happy with Alan or what he was doing, then why didn’t she say something or just leave? I understand if you love someone then you are going to want to work things out and try to make it work, but it seems as though she didn’t fully love him because she is wanting all these nice expensive things and
