Spring is a time of year that many consider the time of birth. The snow thaws and the flowers and plants regrow. Though some do not consider this to be the case, some consider it to be the coming of yard work and the minimalistic beauty of winter fades. Such is the case with William Carlos Williams and Louise Gluck. In William Carlos Williams Spring and All, he presents spring in the more traditional birth period.
He is saying that although it may look like just rain to the average person, there is much more to rain than what meets the eye. He symbolizes things like Rainbows, Fog, and snow. The author stated that the main function of a rainbow “ is to symbolize divine promise, peace between heaven and Earth. He also states that there is much more to fog than just…fog. Fog is used to symbolize confusion.
Spring is universally symbolic for rebirth. Yet Edna St. Vincent Millay, takes a very different perspective in her view in her poem “Spring”. Millay finds the season redundant and agitating. By using negative diction and imagery her message that the beauty of nature can't compensate for the existence of death is extremely clear.

The poem states, “...-it is in that split second, when perhaps the roses drink and the clouds form, that I most understand the invisibility of life and the intensity of vanishing, like steam at the slick edges of the mirror, without a trace. (Line 24-29)”, the author relates how the mystifying of nature, which where used to create similes, is not actually a mystery but just how life goes. The selection of detail that explains why or how roses get their water and answer some of the other mystifying previously mentioned is a way for the readers to see the narrator’s thoughts and his coming to peace with the mysteries of the world. The quote relates back to the narrator as he questioned how certain aspects of nature arrived, but realizes that these things are just how life passes on, which the narrator can relate back to his father. There is a use of an extended metaphor of the seasons in the speech. When Shakespeare uses the metaphor of a weak flower and then it becomes a “killing frost” (Shakespeare 6) might show how liable Wolsey is. The killing of the flower demonstrates the animosity Cardinal has, while the frost shows the king’s release of him and that it only took three days for the flowering.
