Figurative language is often used in “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” because it shows Granny’s hallucinations. The flowery language that often personifies inanimate objects illustrates the intensity and detail of Granny’s hallucinations. For example, “Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was a gauzy shadow…” (398). Using the words “melted” and “gauzy shadow” give the reader a comprehensive picture of what Granny saw. Also, the figurative language used outside of Granny’s hallucinations help the reader understand how events occur in the story.
Point of view helps James Hurst make the story feel desolate. Throughout the story the main character, Brother, was expecting that doodle would die so he would look down on doodle which can show the hate/agitation he had against doodle. “He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s. Then, despite having set up this mood of fear, the speaker takes a step back, and seems to be trying to calm us, the readers, down by reminding us that nothing really happened and that even the environment around the incident has now returned to its original, vivid colors. Following that, however, we are put back into the mood of fear by the repetition of the verse about peering, which is a benefit the form of a pantoum provides to the poem. Writing the
Frederick Douglass uses point of view to show the love that one embodies. Point of view is used to show the love his mother had for him even from being separated. The use of first-person point of view, gave a better understanding of the thoughts coming from the janitor and how he analyzed 14-A’s mental condition throughout the story and used it against her. By using that point of view, the reader is able to dig into the janitor’s reasoning for wanting to mistreat 14-A as he had done. The janitor’s point of view has no limitations due to him being the main character and his being able to speak to the elderly lady in the story. Hinshaw uses the first-person point of view to reveal what is going on in the story, instead of not letting the readers know what is going inside of the main character’s mind. branching off of the trees that are darker in color. Frost uses juxtaposition to show the contrast of the darker trees amongst the white bark. The bark of birch trees can vary in color, white to darker ones such as black. Although the ones he specifically describes are the darker birches, which helps develop the connection to stressful times. The birches being that darker color shows the imagery of bad times and now in this line he puts forth a possible hypothesis claiming that a boy has been swinging on them.
