Imagine if all of a sudden, bits and pieces of your home simply started to disappear. You have no idea why, but you just know it is happening. Day by day more of your house is going missing. First the windows and doors, then the ceiling and walls. Next thing you know, your home is gone and you have nowhere to frame a home. This has been happening to the polar bears for years and eventually no polar bears will have a home due to careless humans contributing to global warming. If humans continue to live our lives the way we do, a harmful impact will be left on the polar species. However, in visual 9.10 of Writing Arguments, the creators of the image chose to demonstrate mostly pathos. Pathos is Greek for “experience” or “suffering” and the point of this appeal is to tap into the intended audience’s values and beliefs. This visual appealed mainly to the emotion of guilt. As one looks at this visual you see a polar bear simply wandering alone in a suburban community. Since the creators of the visual are attempting to produce a clear note that the polar bear is out of place, the audience should realize that the polar bear was displaced from his or home as a result of the actions of humans. Also, considering that the visual is an ad for an electric car, that will also create a sense of guilt because we know as humans how badly driving vehicles powered for gas affects the world. That being said, the audience would again feel a sense of guilt owing to middle class car consumers are aware that their actions will possibly lead to the displacement and possible extinction of polar bears. Although the creators chose to focus more on pathos there is also a bit of Kairos mixed in too. Electric vehicles and the emphasis on being environmentally friendly is very popular these days considering the awareness of climate change. The creators chose to focus more on pathos because using kairos would not have made for a strong enough argument. People know that the climate is changing and polar bears are being displaced now that we hear about it in the news so much. Involving one’s emotions will cause someone to feel more attached to the argument. Especially when that emotion is guilt for the reason no one enjoys having a guilty
