In the article, “The Media Underestimate Police Brutality”, Michael Novick focuses on the lack of of coverage associated with police brutality. He argues that police violence should be seen as a pungent act rather than everyday news. Fact-based examples were given that showed the extent of control which police have over the press statements. Novick believes that people deserve to know the whole truth, and in order to do that the police must come completely clean. The author, Novick attempts to inform the reader on the coverage of police brutality, but in the meanwhile he lets his own beliefs get in the way.
“Frequent exposure to media reports of police abuse or corruption is a strong predictor of perceptions of misconduct and supports the belief that is common.” (France-Respers 1). But unfortunately, it also brings me disheartened feelings. Recently, I was on twitter and I stumbled across a video of a young white male who was roughly about twenty to twenty-five years of age who was being handled so aggressively by about six officers while he was NOT resisting.
As routine officers arrive on scene to carry out the purpose of the police department by providing peace, safety, and to maintain order emotions, rights and authority can disrupt judgment. In the case of Oscar Grant one officers actions were quickly misunderstood because another unarmed person would be killed by a police officer. In my opinion the officer failed to carry out the purpose of the police department because officers are expected to not do unnecessary harm but protect and serve. With new policy educating the public and police officers on how to commutate and react to one another could help decrease these types of actions.

All throughout America, individuals are taught at a young age that police officers are always the “good guys.” Police officers are painted to be trustworthy, honorable, and advocates of justice. This idea is often displayed in the media through television shows, movies, and news specials. For some, this idea still holds truth, however there are many, particularly individuals of color, whom would quickly disagree. Numerous persons of color have been subjected to racial profiling by officers resulting in stops, searches, and false accusation of crimes.
This is a great example on why police brutality is an ongoing topic and why so many people see police officers as bad and untrustworthy people. But the media tends to hide the details, are we getting the whole story or are there things
With this being said, when an officer guns down an unarmed civilian, the media is all over that case. Very rarely does the officers point of view get to be included in the news cast and the main focus is always on the victim’s death. The issue with the media is often the news title. For example, “African American teen shot dead by police in Porterville”. The title of the news articles is usually misleading in order to interest the viewer into watching the news.
India continued to be at war with police brutality for an extended period of time. However, in recent years, police brutality in India has increased significantly. Police brutality demonstrated to readers in the beginning and throughout the novel Q and A by author Vikas Swarup. The main character of the novel, Ram Mohammed Thomas, is first seen being detained by the police after winning a million rupees on a quiz show, How to Become a Millionaire. The cops are harassing, abusing, and humiliating Ram as they look into what occurred in the game show if he cheated or is it pure coincidence.
Sadly, during the last few years the relationship between the community and its police has significantly deteriorated. This has been due to the way some officers have handled certain situations in which the use of violence or deadly force could have been avoided. Because of this, some sectors of the community no longer trust their police; such distrust has gotten to the point that they rather take matters into their own hands than calling them for help. Although not all officers misbehave and abuse their power “it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch”. The media has also contributed in promoting the idea that most cops are bad by transmitting, over and over, videos of police officers abusing their power.
The overabundance of media relating to crime has not only influenced public opinion but has also triggered changes for law enforcement personnel. The bias (or incorrect/incomplete) views of news media have contributed to a negative opinion of law enforcement officers. Television programs and movies have portrayed false realities of the lives of law enforcement
The police department of Los Angeles slogan is, “to protect and to serve.” To protect and to serve as in providing safety and assistance. As of November 29, 2015, 1,077 citizens have been killed by a United States’ police. That is equivalent to at least one death every eight hours. Do you feel protected?
Also that 40 percent of cop killers are black(Bandler, 2016). The media has dramatically affected the view of cops on our general population(Bandler, 2016). A large portion of people today rely solely on specific news stations for information, regardless of their history of credibility and honesty(Bandler, 2016). All news stations at some point have lied and manipulated stories to pull more viewers of a specific demographic(Bandler,
As a result, there is a drastic increase of violent outburst between both sides. For the last years, it was reported that 51.5 percent of black were killed by police officers (ibtimes.com). On the other hand, there have been 51,548 assaults against law enforcement and it resulted in 14,453 injuries in 2015 alone (nleomf.org). In the United States, recently, police brutality has been a popular subject all over the news and social media.
Many people, like myself, believe that police officers do not always get in trouble when situations like police racism or brutality happen. They do not think about getting in trouble because most of them literally don 't at all. When cops get caught for illegal actions they are just going to get in trouble by there own friends on the force, just to be put on paid leave. Not being caught is a big issue and is mainly why cops think that they can do whatever they want and completely get away with it. In many
The media makes the severity of the situation much worse. In some instances, a situation is represented in way that conveys a case as deceptive. Police misconduct, in this situation, is preposterously distorted. For example, the scene one sees on television may be completely inaccurate. In the article Unpacking Public Attitudes to the Police: Contrasting Perceptions of Misconduct with Traditional Measures of Satisfaction, Miller states, “…research found that people's fear of crime was related to crime content in the newspapers they read…”( 6).
