Discretion is the power of officials to choose among multiple possible courses of action; whether or not to give someone a speeding ticket, or give them a warning. Discretion is vital to the police. It is impossible for the police to arrest ever individual who commits a crime; instead, the police rely on their ability to use discretion: handing out tickets, warnings, etc. Discretion is important, but there are situations in which the administration has to limit the officers use of discretion. East Valley’s police department will implement policies that will require officers to make an arrest in certain situations.
The Harlem Renaissance brought the rebirth of music and social culture. One of the greatest musicians achieved influential accomplishments during this era; Kennedy Edward Ellington. The “King of Jazz” better known as Duke Ellington dominated the jazz era during the 1920s. During the Harlem Renaissance he exhibited his dedication to music and displayed impactful leadership characteristics. Ellington also established a legacy that swayed the future generations.

While police are supposed to protect all citizens in our country, in some cases they often abuse their power and force towards black citizens. Lately police brutality has covered media by remaining one of the most serious and divisive human rights violation. Sandra Bland, a twenty eight year old, African American woman who died in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas while in police custody. On July 10, she was excited to travel to Waller County to seek a job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M, where she graduated. To have that feeling suddenly disappear when stopped by a sheriff, Ben Encinia, for a minor traffic ticket.
In the midst of police brutality controversy, a new video went viral on social media showing a South Carolina deputy Ben Fields, violently throwing a high school from her desk in a classroom. “Give me your hands” fields repeated to the silent girl after pinning her to the ground. Let’s review the chain of events that lead such poor example of police intervention. The victim, who’s not yet been identified, was spotted using her cell phone by her teacher during math class.
Police brutality are a big problem in todays society because you hear that law enforcement are killing and beating up on innocent people for no reason. Their is a major issue toward police brutality because they kill and beat up the weak instead of protecting the weak the law enforcement is there to protect people from bad people not there to kill and beat people who did nothing to nobody and accusing them for something they did not do to have a reason to kill people or beat people. Throughout history the role of power, specifically in the police institution has been a controversial topic. Police work started as an institution purely based on personal and community judgment, often leading to wrongful verdicts. Specifically policing in the 1970’s through the 1990’s experienced a significant amount of change. In order to diminish or reduce corruption the Knapp commission, and Blue Ribbon Panels were put into place. However, throughout time police policies, and state laws evolved into a new institution devoted to “ service and professionalism, and responsibility for public safety and ethical conduct”(Dodge, Rennison, 120).
In the black community, there have been many questionable incidents between police officers and black citizens. An officer might approach an African American who broke the law differentially than a White American based on their own discretion. Whereby an officer would hesitate to immediately arrest a white person for breaking the same law, they would handle the arrest of a black person differently. This is problematic: Police discretion impacts the way the society views the criminal justice system by having too much range on enforcing the law.
Discretion has a fairly effective role within the justice system, specifically when looking at the sentencing and punishment of offenders. Discretion can have a distinct effect on the outcome of a case. The role of decision making through an individual may provide for a different insight into different cases which therefore means that no two verdicts are reached in the same way. The role of discretion when looking at charge negotiation (or plea bargaining) is to decide whether or not the accused may be granted a 'lesser ' punishment in exchange, they plead guilty. from prosecutors.

According to the National Institute of Justice ,"the use of force by law enforcement officers becomes necessary and is permitted under specific circumstances, such as in self-defense or in defense of another individual or group. " The law enforcement are allowed to use lethal, non-lethal force, physical, and verbal restraints. The amount of force used by the law can be depended by the situation they are currently in. While on duty, a officers are trained to judge when the situation requires a use of force.
This is an important concept because it explains that officers should not follow society and pressure from the public and media but follow the laws that our country. This a good thing to have when dealing with persuasive criminals and individuals. Both officers and civilians benefit from this principle because it protects both parties. Officers also need to know the laws, so they can stay away form trouble and not be deceived by public persuasion. This is a good thing to have in America today, because many criminals will say anything to get out of punishment.
Corruption is a type of misconduct and offense in which the police break their contract and oath by abusing their power for personal gain or even for departmental gain. Examples of types of police corruption a. Bribery- police officer receives bribes so that they cannot write tickets for people who have gone against the law for example, from prostitutes and gambling, bribery does not only affect the united states but its world spread, examples of other countries with highest percentage of bribery are Pakistan and France. b. Assault on suspects- police officers use excessive force on suspects leading to injuries and at times suspects end up dying in their custody. Some police officers have been charged with murder of suspects in their custody.

The criminal justice system cannot achieve its goal without the active participation of the general public. If we take a look at the ancient police setup in medivial and ancient india we come across that there were various provisions for the participation of the public working with the police. The word police, inspires confidence inspires a sense of truse, security, commitment, and public service.
Police deviance is something that isn’t particularly talked about in the open. The reactions to certain actions by the police are either kept under wraps or blown up in the media to a dramatic extent. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the negative side of police deviance and the repercussions that follow. This will allow some light to be shown on the actions of officers that don’t follow the rules that they set out to uphold.
