The job of a police officer is much more demanding than what is commonly displayed in the media. It is often portrayed as a crime fighting spree, but in reality, it is a multi-faceted profession. As a police officer, the safety of the general public is the key responsibility. In Canada, regional police forces are assigned to regional municipalities in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. In the absence of such forces, provincial police (as is the case in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador) or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rest of Canada) perform police duties for the region. Municipal police are law enforcement agencies that are under the control of local government. This includes the municipal government, where it is the smallest administrative subdivision. They receive funding from the city budget, and may have fewer legal powers than the state funded force. In British Columbia, municipal police departments are overseen by an appointed police board made up of civilian members of the community. Under the Police Act a municipal police board is required to determine the priorities, goals and objectives of the police department. A police board consists of the mayor, who acts as chair, one person appointed by the municipal council and up to seven people appointed by the province.
