Invasion of Poland and Russia The invasion was a joint invasion of Poland by Germany, the Soviet Union, the Free City of Danzig, and a small Slovak contingent that marked the beginning of World War II. The German invasion began on 1 September 1939. German forces invaded Poland from the north, south, and west the morning after the Gleiwitz incident (Nazi Germany attacked a radio station on august 31st.). Slovak forces advanced alongside the Germans in northern Slovakia. When the Allies heard of this, they decided to help out. Then, Nazi germany declared war on france. Because of this the Allied forces (France, Poland, United Kingdom, Canada, and United States of America) made a plan called: Operation Overlord. They were planning to take Normandy from the Nazis. On June 5, 1944, the Allies dropped paratroopers on the beach. Then on june 6th The allies invaded the beach by land ships carrying troops.
D-day was brutal. Nearly 12,000 men lost their lives on D-day. Also, they lost 2,000 aircraft. When the troops arrived in land, ships along the beaches were met with heavy fire. There was nowhere to go so they unloader the landships a charged. Many of them were dead before they even hit the beach. The men who made it charged and fired back. The allies had different groups. They all attacked the beach from different points.
The target was a 50-mile coast of normandy. It was divided 5 ways. Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. But strong winds blew them east of their intended positions Wikipedia.org.
