Soon after the conclusion of the Korean War (the war that split North Korea and South Korea) Kim Il Sung began to execute several “Korean revolutionaries”, (North Korean Gulags, n.d.) declaring that he had a zero tolerance for dissent. This is the precise reason that North Korean gulags exist today. The prison camps known as gulags were made to imprison political traitors of Kim Il Sung. The sole purpose of these camps were to inflict punishment upon the alleged political revolutionaries, as well as propaganda. This propaganda was meant to scare the citizens of North Korea into thinking that their regime was almighty. They were to be brainwashed into believing that their regime could do no harm, and they were to be completely committed to it.
