Growing up we want to believe that our opinions are our own, but the truth is we are greatly influenced from our society. Political socializations affect us at a very young age and it will continue to influence us throughout life. An individual is fed with information from various influences, consequently leading to shaping our views values and our political views. When I was younger I thought everything, my parents did and believed was correct, and furthermore their opinions became my opinions. At a young age, we naturally accept the political views and beliefs of our family. Nevertheless, minority may still face discrimination till this day, and we must speak up for our rights. As “Pancho” who faced discrimination growing up he didn’t sit still and accept the discrimination, but joined the Union. He was working full time with Cesar Chavez campaign and was involved in the Texas Rangers confrontation. He got arrested and assaulted by the Texas Rangers, his case went all the way to the Supreme Court and he won. Whatever we do is involved in politics, but it is our decision if we want to make a difference. An example of differences of political socialization was displayed in people’s reaction to the Olsen Simpson verdict. Blacks and whites, men and women, rich and poor, all had different views of the verdict. However, something that played a huge influence on the case was the relationship of police towards blacks. From a young age African American parents had to warn their children of the police and to be weary of them. Why was that? The police were known for excessive police misconduct, abuse, and harassment on minority particularly black and Latinos. Instead of the police being there to protect and make the community feel safe, they brought fear and mistreatment towards them. As result many individual didn’t trust the police.
