Cece Cannata p6 Chapter 1 Outline: The Study of American Government 1. What is Political Power? a) Power: someone who has power is able to influence the actions of another person and get them to act how they want i) Power is even the simplest of things, like a school declining an applicant b) Authority: is the right to use power i) A president or senator have “formal authority” which means that their office, like a presidency, gives them the authority to make the decisions that they do c) Legitimacy: what makes it okay to use power. A person has authority if their right to act is conferred by law or by a state/national constitution.
A People’s History of the United States and A Patriot’s History of the United States explain the history of colonial and revolutionary-era America extremely different. In A People’s History of the United States, it explains history from almost everybody’s point of view. It describes what African-American slaves, white servants, women, children, Native Americans, and white men went through. In A Patriot’s History of the United States, it essentially does the exact opposite. It only explains history through white property owning men’s point of view; it completely ignores everybody else involved.
I am Densia Wray, a sophomore at City College majoring in Political Science and possibly Public Relations or minoring in Journalism. My decision to pursue these majors came after thoroughly enjoying my Intro to Media Communications and Intro to Political Science classes, as well as my desire to create local and societal change. Although it took a while for me to make this decision, once I started listening to what I really wanted and not what I thought was wanted from me I realized what I really want to do with my life. Ever since my first real introduction to the world and its realities in my high school English classes I knew that my purpose was not to conform to what society wants from me but to challenge society to change. Over the summer
Foundations of The Political System There are five foundations of America’s political system. These foundations are Popular Sovereignty, Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, Federation, and Individual Rights. The first of the foundations is Popular Sovereignty, where,“the people possess the superior power over their political community, and can alter their government or amend the constitution.” (Ahmed Ehab,”Foundations of the American Political System”).
The Congress was created as “the first branch” of government. The Framers of the Constitution expected Congress to wield most of the nation government’s powers, including its most important ones like “power of the purse” and the ultimate authority to declare war. They understood that Congress was essential to sustaining federalism and maintaining the separation of powers (WDB 393). To be elected to the U.S. Congress, a person becomes a candidate by running in a primary election. Candidates need to form organizations of personal followings and win “their party’s” nomination simply by getting more primary votes than the next candidate.
America is a nation where great things happen consistently, but with the good comes the bad. People are judged and criticized everyday for who they are or who they like. This should be changed. In this free country no one should be stripped of what they are because it's different than a majority. If the citizens of America come together and realize being different is not a bad thing, we can begin to heal as a whole nation.
I also know that my days on the PGA Tour won’t last forever. After I’ve finished my golfing career I plan on dedicating the rest of my life, until retirement, to my country. While I would prefer to serve in the military, my age would put too many others at risk in the field so I would love to work for a government intelligence agency or in politics. This is where my interest in international relations comes from. My love for this country exceeds that of golf, and living in America has been and will always continue to be a privilege.
In 1776 Congress sent me on my most important diplomatic mission. I was asked to persuade France to help America in its fight for independence. Before I left, I lent Congress about 4,000 pounds of my own money to help carry on the war. I reached Paris just before Christmas. "The Dr. Franklin," as I was called in Paris, was very popular.
Finally, I help everyone I can and I honor the country. I show these attributes by doing community work, helping out my family and developing my own opinions on political
Candidate’s interest in public service: The decisions for those of us who have decided to dedicate their lives to public service have made commitments to this effect for many reasons. For me, the inspiration to do so began around eight o’clock in the morning of September 11, 2001. At the time that I began to experience this realization, I was not exactly sure as to what I could do to help improve the situation. However, I knew instinctively that it was time for me to do something worthy, be a part of something bigger than myself.
I always serve my community in any way possible. I am always a good leader for groups, sports, etc., I always welcome new ideas even if
Is America the greatest country in the world? Americans certainly seem to think so. America has fought in every major conflict since 1776. She has helped rebuilt nations, jumpstarted economies, fought against oppressive regimes, and been a global force for change.
Doing what I love and being able to support myself and loved ones is important to me. I am a very independent person and I like to do things my way. I like to set individual goals everyday, whether that means doing my homework before a certain time, or completing something for the week. They help me get my work done on time and efficiently.
In life I value success, balance, freedom, resilience and my well-being. These values will influence my career because, when choosing a career, it is important to have values. People who choose careers that are aligned with beliefs and values are more likely to find contentment and success in their
Stranded in a Foreign World What makes America so great? Many would start with the job opportunities, the freedom, or some would even say the security. I, on the other hand, see America as more than that. What makes America great, in my opinion, is their willingness to help others in need, to welcome those begging for a new start.
