The concept of popular sovereignty is an idea based on the assumption that a few people are empowered to act on behalf of everyone else and this same idea is reflected in religion. A person may say that he has been empowered to communicate the wishes of the gods, or that indeed he is a god. Like the concept of popular sovereignty, religion requires the suspension of disbelief.
