Peace is an essential thing that everyone needs in their life. So why doesn't everyone get it? Between school or work, family, and trying to meet the expectations of others, it is difficult to find the time and the space for peace. With so many other responsibilities, there is no place for you to put yourself first. Peace is harmony that you must find within yourself to accept the things around you. While peace comes with the idea of all burdens burning, it comes with negative and positive connotations. Peace is sought after, but to satisfy the idea you must avoid negative peace. In the novel “Shark Girl” The main character Jane loses her arm to a shark attack. She then follows steps to come to terms and peace with losing her arm. “Happy ending roll credits pick our way out, over crushed pieces of popcorn to emerge into the glaring light of day” (Bingham 167)
Jane’s story is connected to positive peace because she followed through with acceptance using her surroundings. She reached out for help from her family, doctors, and friends. Most importantly she faced what destroyed her peace itself, the ocean. Facing her biggest fear allowed her to become resilient. She became bigger and better than her surroundings and transformed herself into successfully finding peace in between her trauma. In converse to positive peace comes negative peace. In the article “What is negative peace?” the author describes and explains what negative peace is on a human.
