In the spring of 2012, I was informed that we were going to move. As a thirteen going on fourteen year old, the news was rather jarring. I was born and raised in that house, in that town, it was all I knew. We packed up our belongings and began the 678 mile journey to our new “home.” Moving from Hartland, Michigan to Durham, North Carolina was not only immense in distance, but in way of life.
Nicholas A. Roes writes about the road to recovery in “A License to be Happy.” In this article, Nicholas tells his readers of the main denominators in the “ingredients of happiness.” The ingredients are known as optimism, gratitude, forgiveness and mutually satisfying relationships. He goes on to explain that one of the biggest obstacles in most people’s day-to-day lives is the constant thought of never being happy and end up supporting the idea that others can obtain happiness. Instead of seeing what we have, they often avoid looking at the good in their life and lean more on the negative aspect of their life.
The day was finally here, I was ready. I had all my bags packed ready to go on a new journey of riding a bus for 27 hours to Washington D.C for a Citizenship Washington Focus trip though 4-H. I said goodbye to my mom at the Grainery and hopped into the large van with many other strangers who I will soon realize will become my “family” for the next ten days. As we drove on the interstate we had to stop at Brookings to pick up another passenger before completing the short trip in a van to Sioux Falls. Once we arrived at Sioux Falls we had the chance to eat at Deny’s.
When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?”
The benefits of applying boundaries and rules for children and young people consistently and fairly are that all children and young people will know what is expected of them. They will understand what is acceptable and what is not. If rules and boundaries are inconsistent or unfair, children will become confused and will not know what is expected of them. They will be unsure whether their actions or comments will get them into trouble. If rules are not applied consistently as staff are not aware of them, children will react to this and comment on this, e.g. you have given X a warning and have not moved their name on the cloud.
1. For this week’s experimental practice, I utilized the Forest Awaken sounds and the Cruise Imagery. I chose the forest awakens sounds because I figured I could use it aside from right before bed. I chose the cruise imagery because I have never had an experience with guided imagery and wanted to try it. I tried to be creative with the ways I used the forest awakening sounds to see if it had any affect during different activities.
Moving is a burden that has profoundly altered my outlook on things. Going back a few years, I moved to the United States, which meant I’d have to be placed in a new school. This transition was truly and utterly difficult for me, because it happened in the middle of the school year and I was not ready for what was about to be thrown my way. I was scared out of my mind, it felt as if the walls were crumbling down on me and I had no escape route.
