Concussions are among the most common and most dangerous injuries youth athletes receive. Most concussions and other mild traumatic brain injuries should completely go away within one to six weeks. In some cases, however, people experience post-concussion syndrome (PCS) with symptoms lasting far longer than this. Post-concussion syndrome can include headaches, dizziness, irritability, difficulty focusing or completing tasks, etc. (Long).Because of safety precautions sports leagues are unwilling to take, people will suffer from serious physical, cognitive, and emotional problems. There are approximately 1.3 million high school and 2.8 million youth football players in this country. That's more than 4 million children and teenagers playing football. Now, compare that number with the 1,700 or so adults playing football in the NFL. Yet, the nation's focus, when it comes to concussions, is focused sincerely on the NFL. Some have made efforts to do so. An example is the NCAA, recommending that football teams cut down on the number of full contact days and abandon two practices a day (Aldrich). But this is only a recommendation! Nothing so far has actually been done to reduce/ bring down the number of concussions. On the other hand, the equipment that is required to play . Many products such as helmets, headbands, and mouth guards have been claimed to prevent concussions. But, as of right now, none of these claims have been sustained/ lived up to that claim(Sports). Most of these products offer protection, not prevention. Football leagues need to do more to help the safety of young football players because, they are not fully independent adults, and, they are not represented by the players union as NFL players are. This means that football leagues need to do more to protect the safety and well being of football
