The Aboriginal people have been abused in many ways, both mentally and physically. They had been torn away from their homes, their families, their lives and dropped into places that they did not know. The places were called Residential Schools. Residential Schools has given many victims PTSD (Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder). PTSD has symptoms that include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. This led to alcoholism and other things to try to get the flashbacks to stop.

When the First Nations agreed to education, they did not know what they were getting into. They expected the kind of education that other people at the time were getting. Kids were not given the right clothing for the weather, leaving many to die from the cold. The buildings themselves were unsafe. Fires occurred in many schools even though the owners were told multiple times to get fire sprinklers. They had fire poles, but the kids were locked in the dorms leaving them helpless.

That's just scratching the surface of what happened in Residental Schools. The kids were forced to do physical labor, like tending fields, washing floors and carrying firewood. The treaty said that they would learn how to read and write, and they did, but not the way they thought they would. Most of the time they did physical labor not learning.

Many kids tried to run away to escape this horrid place. Unfortunately, most didn't arrive home. But to them, even running away and taking their chances was better than staying in Residental School. If the conditions were bad, kids would have to stay another year or more. The treatment at Residential Schools would kill many of them. It would be a longer, and excruciating death.
