To depict desolation and struggle of a common man in the context of post-WWII Italy, a slice-of-life incident and an open-ended climax has been used. Real locations help in depicting time and space and allows the audiences to enter the world of the characters. In the last scene where the protagonist is caught stealing the bicycle, the owner does not press charges against him. He is released and is seen to be following the crowd and the film ends. Therefore, the story comes across as a real, slice-of-life incident; and unlike formalist films, it does not end with a resolution. The audiences do not know what might happen next to these characters. The film ends, but the story doesn’t.
The film uses non-professional unknown actors to keep the
