Women we’re treated fair and properly; at least that’s what men in the postclassical era would think. Some men now might think this as well. However, in the postclassical era not all women had the right and the freedom that women nowadays have. In some regions women were forced to obey their husbands, others were highly supported from their men, and others were in charge of households or businesses. There might be different views upon women during this era but during the postclassical era it all depended on the region they lived in, the religion they worshiped, and the type of society they ran. Women in the Byzantine Empire were given the right to share their voices and be witnesses in courts. “…the power to act as witnesses in the numerous assemblies of men…gives them the habit of speaking more freely than they ought” (Doc 3). Women in other societies weren’t give this right to share their voice in assemblies with men. Under Justinian’s rule women were relied on, thanks to Theodora, Justinian’s wife. She technically controlled Justinian and influenced him greatly with her plans, according to the Stearn’s book. Women would eventually able to take control of the throne, including herself after Justinian’s death! Women were also given freedom in Mali of Africa. “The women there have friends and companions amongst men…Likewise for the men, there are companions from amongst women outside the prohibited degrees” (Doc 5). This demonstrates that women had freedom just like men, to be friends with others and other companions when Muslim culture didn’t allow that. However women still acted as slaves for leaders. Still this doesn’t compare with other civilizations because women in Muslim descent weren’t able to have other friends except their father, husband, and brothers except in Africa. These two civilizations gave women certain rights and treated them differently according to the society they ran.
