West Virginia has a high poverty rate among the young population. Drugs, marriage/divorce, annual income, are some of the reasons these children face poverty. The number of children living in poverty is growing each day. A single parent raising their children has more of a chance to live in poverty than that of two parents raising their children. Nine percent of poor children live in families with no parent present. Many low-income families living in rural areas of West Virginia face tremendous amounts of unavoidable poverty. West Virginia is the seventh of fifty states with the highest child poverty rates.

One way we can help is, the state legislature can take actions to help struggling families by investing in early intervention and child hood programs such as home visits, enacts a refundable state earned income tax credit and by making college more affordable says “ Ted Boettner”. In the last year, the legislature has taken few steps in helping families trying to reduce poverty. They should want to protect the children and give them a good environment and keep them off the streets but they lack the need to care enough.
Other ways to stop poverty among our youth is trying to keep them in school. We should try to push children to stay in school. School will give children that do not have enough food a good meal to eat and an education in the process.
Drugs are a big problem with poverty also. It is simple, if you want better for your kids and do not want them living in poverty quit the drugs and clean yourself up. Do not keep on doing the stuff you are doing and wonder why your kids are the way they are.
We can prevent many of these problems. Marriage is another big problem. If you and your spouse cannot seem to get along then go to counseling for it or work it out on your own. If you care about your children then you will do what is best for
