For this assignment, I chose to watch No Reservations, which features two chefs named Kate and Nick, who met and eventually fell in love with each other through their passion for cooking. In accordance with the given readings, I do not think that having a workplace romance between the two main characters was a reasonable idea. The narration is presented from Kate’s point of view and emphasizes her dedication to a chef work. Initially, she views Nick as a threat to her position in the kitchen, even telling him that she has worked hard to obtain the position and would not let any person replace her. After some time, they become more comfortable being around each other and ultimately develop a close relationship. In particular, both characters are known professionals in their field, with Kate being portrayed as the more powerful romantic partner and Nick as her subordinate. Nick explains that he only took the job at the restaurant because of an honor to work alongside Kate, whom he admires. Paula, the restaurant owner, expresses favoritism towards Nick due to his exuberant personality; in this part, the film clearly demonstrates that power may be a factor determining a specific person's career perspectives (Waldron & Kassing, 2011a). According to Kate's beliefs, Nick was only using her to gain her job. Consequently, Nick chooses to leave the restaurant to show that no intention to overthrow Kate as the head chef is pursued.
