Power Corrupts Using animals as characters, George Orwell in his book Animal Farm illustrated the communist Russian government in the nineteen-forties. The revolution of Animal Farm originated from the colossal pig, Old Major’s dream of a farm operated completely by animals, who are all equal. Old Major died soon after, and Napoleon, who is also a pig, took it upon himself to turn the dream into reality. Later, the animals rebelled, driving the farmer off of his property. Collectively the animals created seven commandments, which ensured equality among all animals. Over time, these commandments were bent by the pigs who had secretly established themselves as the government. Napoleon forcefully became dictator, lead with terror through his band of dogs who would attack on his command. The other animals were treated cruelly, while the pigs lived like royalty. There were several instances where the other animals found that the commandments on the wall had been changed. For instance, the rule “no animal shall kill any other animal” “magically” transformed overnight to “no animal shall kill any other animal without cause.” Eventually all the rules were ammended and the pigs essentially became human-like. Napoleon used force to ensure his way. After stealing a liter of puppies, he trained them to be vicious body guards. Eventually Napoleon became tired of being opposed by Snowball, who was another pig in power. On one occasion, Napoleon whistled and the dogs chased Snowball off the farm. He unrightfully used his dogs to terrify the farm animals. For instance, he slaughtered anyone who double crossed him or had a contrary idea. He harnessed this fear to eliminate the animals freedom of speech, because anytime someone was about pose a different idea the dogs would simultaneously start
