n the Puritan society, power is often given to people because of the land that one owns, one 's age, one 's race, one ’s religious beliefs, or one’s reputation in the community. In Act I of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is a clear sense of hierarchy in their community. There are few people who pull away and actually gain or lose power regardless of their standing. With the idea that the devil has come into this community, some see this as an opportunity to gain the power that they have been lacking for most of their lives. Even though in the Puritan society, men are much more dominant, Tituba and Abigail Williams are two women who hold great power due to their involvement in the alleged witchcraft. Abigail 's confidence in her position with the girls shows her dominance and power over them. Not only does Abigail have power over Betty because she is older than her, and Abigail is basically her older sister figure, but she also controls the other girls who are all different ages and many are close to Abigail 's age. A common theme in Abigail is putting the blame on others rather than taking responsibility. Instead of taking of taking responsibility for her actions, Abby decides to switch the blame To Tituba for what she has done that is against the Puritan beliefs.“Sometimes I wake and find myself standing in the open doorway and not a stitch on my body! I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her Barbados songs and tempting me with-”. Abigail who is unlike many of the girls from this time that we hear about does many things that don 't go along with the guidelines that they are supposed to live by. Rather than accepting that she is not pure, she switches it so people will think Tituba made her this way. In reality, Tituba could not have done this but the people of their community believe Abigail because of the fact that Tituba is black, follows a different religion, and is a woman. Abigail now has complete control over the situation, because she has the power to blame whoever she wants as long as the people of the town keep
