Esteban loved Blanca and treated her well, until she disobeyed him and then he sent her to boarding school. As a young adult she was caught leaving the pond after a midnight tryst with her lover Pedro. Esteban slapped her and forcefully brought her home, he treated her a possession. Esteban did not care for his elderly mother. He left his sister Ferula to care for his mother and only returned when his mother dies, about twenty years later. Esteban did not treat his sister Ferula very well. He despised her living in his home and only allowed her to be in the home to please his wife Clara. When Esteban found his sister sleeping in the same bed as his wife he banned his sister from his home, he was jealous of the relationship his wife and sister had. Who is considered family? Esteban considered his wife, daughter and granddaughter family. He had a sister and a mother but he did not care for either of them and only tolerated his sister for so long before he banned her from his home and family. Clara loved everyone, she adored Ferula and she was like a sister to her. She had a kind and innocent nature. Clara was welcoming to everyone. Ferula adored Clara and cared for Blanca as if she were her own child. How is the culture portrayed in the film different and/or similar to your own? This culture is very different from my own. My family did not care whom I married. The portrayal of my marriage had no reflection on my family. My mother was the head of the household, she made the rules but was not an overbearing, she allowed her children to grow as people and watched as they made their way in life.
