In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the theme is the power of words. The power of words are able to heal and destroy. Hitler used his words to control, conquer, and destroy. Hitler was described as a strange, small man by Death and the three details that were included was that he would part his hair from the opposite side to everyone else, he would make himself a small, strange mustache, and he would one day rule the world. The details give an idea that Hitler is physically weak. Hitler used his power of words to control and conquer the world. He used his power to murder millions. The power of Hitler’s words encouraged people to hate Jews. Words can be very powerful no matter how people use it. Liesel used her words for everybody and her words comforted everyone. The words Mein Kampf saved Max. While Max withdrew from the Hubermann’s house, he had the book Mein Kampf. He was traveling through one German town to the next. Death says, “Strangely, as he turned the pages and progressed through the chapters, it was only two words he ever tasted. Mein Kampf. My struggle… Mein Kampf. The only thing to save him”(Zusak, 160). Max used Hitler’s words to save his life. Mein Kampf is a story about Hitler and he plants words like seeds throughout an entire nation which grows forests of thoughts throughout all of Germany. Max writes the book, The Word Shaker, which is a story about Liesel. There are word shakers who climb up into trees and send words down to people below. The word shakers understand the power of words and are sent out to control the forests. But there is skinny girl who is a word shaker. She is able to climb higher than the others because she is hungry for words. She then meets a man who is despised by her country, and they become friends later
