This is currently my first year enrolling in Richland College, but the experience is just the beginning. The earliest memory of reading was all the syllabus that each class had before school started. The most commonly identified theme when “The Lesson,” by Toni Cade Bambara, is read is undoubtedly one about social and racial inequality during the 1960’s and how Miss Moore, the children’s teacher, is pointing it out to the children. Jefferson, a poor young black man, was a part of a liquor store shootout where three men were killed; the only one who survived, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins, a school teacher, has been asked to persuade Jefferson into feeling like a human. Despite the fact that Jefferson’s execution date was set, Grant has to go through many complications to make a hog into a human again.
Kidwatching is an interesting and helpful strategy for me to understand my focus students’ literacy behavior. This observation strategy is an ideal way for me to get to know my students’ literacy tendencies and interests. There are many students who do not feel comfortable with their reading and writing skills, which causes the students to lack interest in all literature. After watching and interviewing my focus students, I learned that not all students like to read and write. Additionally, I learned that I must always be flexible in the classroom because things may not go as planned and I may have to quickly adjust.

Speece and Cooper (2002) report a connection between early semantic skills and reading comprehension in their study of the connection between oral language and early reading. Decoding is vital because it is the basis on which all other reading instruction builds. If children are unable to decode words their reading will lack fluency, their vocabulary will be restricted, and their reading comprehension will suffer. Explicit, systematic and multi-sensory phonics instruction produces effective decoding skills.
