This was only accomplished because of the importance of the women in the communities. Women became the ideal item to be exchanged between the Indians and the Europeans. As the Spaniards began to realize the importance of the women, women became the symbols for alliance and peace. “Women’s more active participation in intermarriage and hospitality rituals later reemerged in critical ways in different native groups’ “practices of peace”” (Barr, 247).
Clocking the First Americans What sort of evidence (or quality of evidence) will be necessary to establish firmly the presence of a pre-Clovis culture in the Americas? As stated by Meltzer in the article, Clocking the First Americans, it is universally agreed that the first Americans were in North and South America by Clovis times, approximately 11,200 years ago. The question that is hotly debated however, is whether or not there were people present prior to this Clovis time.
The word pre-Columbian is used to discuss the history of the Americas in the era before European impact. Pre-Columbian was frequently used in discussing the abundant civilizations of the Americas. During pre-Columbian America, there was nothing, but wilderness and Indians. There were about thirty thousand square miles of desert. The Indians set fires to the trees to kill the area.
In chapter three, Religion of the Aztecs, Carrasco paints an interesting picture demonstrating the complex and mystifying nature of Aztec religion. Much of what was practiced in Aztec religion had some connected to the god, Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl or the Plumed Serpent. Most communities included ceremonial centers dedicated to demonstrating the importance of Quetzalcoatl. At the same time, the cosmos also played a large role in how the Aztecs worshiped. One example of this is how the human body was regarded as one of the most sacred spaces due to certain body parts being assigned to different aspects of the world (pg. 88, 89).
Discussion Question 5: Before the Europeans’ arrival, the gender roles in Puebloan society were loose. The Puebloans believed that both men and women influenced different areas of their lives, thus not one gender had more power over the other. The women spent most of the days preparing food for their households. The men worked the fields: sons worked their mothers’ corn plots, brothers their sisters’, and husbands their mother-in-laws’. In a horticultural society, the women asserted power and control over household activities such as seed production and child-rearing while the men communicated with the gods and protected the village from dissent and factionalism.
