The president have many, many powers granted by the Constitution. Some powers require agreements between the president and congress and some don't. Solely speaking, the president have the power to negotiate and sign treaties with other countries as well as make trade agreements with nations that lie on the pacific rim such as Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Vietnam and etc. The president have the power to veto a bill passed by Congress although Congress can override that veto with a 2/3 vote and that bill becomes law. He/she serves as the commander in chief in the armed forces and the state militia and can deploy troops. The power to persuade is especially important when divided governments exist such as democratic and republican members
