Fitting in the glass slipper is not the only way to find love, sometimes you have to battle with the person before you can really figure out your feelings. Between Pride and Prejudice and “Cinderella” there are many things that are similar, and many things that are different. The economic situation changed enough, in between the two times that these stories were written, that we can tell a difference, but there are still some similarities. For example, they both have similar social classes, they live in societies where behavior partly determines class, and they both marry upwards as far as class goes. To start, in “Cinderella,” there is a King, a Prince, the Nobles, and then the servants. In Pride and Prejudice, there is the Gentry, the Middle Classes - like merchants and lawyers - and the Lower Classes - like craftsman, journeyman, and apprentices. These are similar, but the complexity of which they are given is much more acknowledged in Pride and Prejudice. These social classes are a much more important part of Pride and Prejudice than “Cinderella.” “Cinderella” didn’t really talk too much about social class, but the way she was treated shows that they were there. One example is when the author of Pride and Prejudice expressed the importance of social class with Lady Catherine. When Elizabeth meets Lady Catherine, she tries to be very kind and polite to her. Lady Catherine is nice, but at the same time, she keeps mentioning things that are proving that she is better than everyone in the house. Pride and Prejudice is a three-part book with over 300 pages, that can take a long time to read. “Cinderella” is a four page fairy tale written for children, that takes about ten minutes to read all the way through. Pride and Prejudice is more of a high school level book written for an older audience that will understand the details written in it. “Cinderella,” is a children’s story about a girl who has a fairy godmother to help her get to the ball, and once she gets there, she dances with the Prince who falls in love with her and makes her a Princess. It gives a false sense of love, that a man and a woman just have to dance for one night, and they will fall in love and get married. Pride and Prejudice has a much more relatable story of love. The man and woman have their ups and downs, they start to get to know each other and their life stories, they eventually fall in love and get married.
