Priming In Blink

In the novel Blink author Malcolm Gladwell creates very fascinating terms to describe "triggers which influence our behavior without our awareness of such changes"(10). One of the terms that he uses in Blink is "Priming." Malcolm Gladwell describes this word by scattering the words in test relating to older people like ""worried," "Florida," "old," "lonely," "gray," "bingo," and "wrinkle" to make participants adaptive unconscious think about the state of being old"(53). Priming brings thoughts of being old to the surface of subconsciousness to make the thoughts more accessible than less accessible thoughts. The food that people eat in Pakistan is very different from what people eat in United States. In Pakistan they did not eat pizza, burgers, or any other fast foods on a regular basis. They ate chapati. It is a kind of bread, but it is flat and round. To eat chapati a person would have to break a piece and then dip it into a curry or any other dish. On very special occasions, people would order pizza to eat for the celebration. When I was in Pakistan, I did not like pizza at all. The pizza that they made in Pakistan would be cold, and they would not deliver fresh pizza. Also people could not even warm up the pizza because in Pakistan not every person has ovens like Americans do here. People there usually cook their food on stoves made from mud by burning wood. The whole house would be blanketed in smoke every day by burning wood when cooking. The pizza in Pakistan tasted like plastic because the cheese would be frozen and the crust would be hard as rock. By all this experience, I was primed to not eat pizza whenever I was offered it in America. In Blink Malcolm Gladwell writes that the testers for Seven-Up reported "If you add fifteen percent more yellow to the green on the package- what people report is that the taste experience has lime or lemon flavor"(163). In other word this quote explains that people were primed because lemon has yellow color so when they saw yellow color on the package they

But in reality those people just live as Pakistani do. When in fact, the difference is that American people get paid in dollars and Pakistani people get paid in rupees. In Pakistan one dollar equal hundred rupees so when people convert thousands of dollars into rupees it becomes a lot of money. Then American people do not hesitate to buy expensive things in Pakistan. So Pakistani people get primed because of seeing American’s buy expensive things. Pakistani people think American’s do not have to work hard to get paid like they do. Therefore, Pakistani’s starts to believe that America is greatest land on earth. In Blink group of people were showed a black face and a white face for an experiments. What they found was that people who “who saw a black face first, they were also quicker to call a wrench a gun” (233). This happens because people get primed by media. On all of news channel they percent the faces and the video of the crime. So whenever they show a different race person as a suspect, people start to see that race as a threat just like how Pakistani believes that America is precious land.
