Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan author was born in Kabul on March 4th, 1965 (GoodReads, 2017). Due to his father's involvement in the Foreign Ministry, his family moved to Paris in 1976 (Benioff + Hosseini, 2017) . Eventually a few years later his family wanted to return back to Kabul. The Hosseini couldn't go back due to a coup and Soviet invasion and because of this in 1980 they were granted political asylum and were able to move to San Jose California (Hosseini, 2017). Khaled Hosseini career did not start out as a writer. His original passion was biology obtaining a bachelor's from Santa Clara University in 1988 and achieving his M.D in 1993 from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine (Benioff, 2017). Most of the people who live in Afghanistan are bilingual with the official languages being Pashto and Dari which is also referred to as Dari(everydayculture, 2017). Quite a few of Afghans are religious. Whether they are from either denomination of the Shia or the Sunnis the Afghans study Islam which involves respecting the five pillars and understanding and respecting the Koran(everydayculture, 2017). Common foods that Afghan people have in their diet include things such as dried fruits, flatbread, nuts, and quite a few dairy products such as butter, cream, and yogurt (everydayculture,2017). Due to sticking with Islamic customs a lot of Afghans do not eat pork or drink any alcohol (everydayculture,2017). Afghans also have different celebrations in their community. These include a holiday to celebrate their national independence, and a celebration of the New Year on the 21st of March which originally in the past was to celebrate the coming of spring with a fertility (everydayculture,2017).
