The Oka affair turned many heads in Canada, and the world. There were two sides, the Oka, and the Canadian government. Both sides thought they were in the right, but who was. This essay will talk about the rights and wrongs of each side. I have researched this topic from many point’s of view.
Montreal, 28th August. A new controversial bill proposed by the sovereigntistParti Quebecois ‘revives’ tensions between English and French-speakers in the Canadian province Quebec. Since the Parti Québécois, that advocates for national sovereignty for the province Quebec, came to power a ’language war’ has been going on. For the political party of René Lévesque was in a new language law in 1976 a high priority.
Today, Canada is seen as a multicultural and peaceful nation that has evolved over the course of history. This great nation would never have been possible without the impact that former Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson left on this country. His achievements and insights profoundly affected and shaped Canada’s nation. First, peacekeeping is an important part of Canada’s heritage and a reflection of its fundamental beliefs that Pearson implemented after dealing with world changing situations and winning a Nobel Prize. Also, his contributions as a liberal leader as well as the flaws and controversy with Diefenbaker did in fact define this country.
Forgive, not because they deserve forgives, but because you deserve peace. It’s not easy to stop blaming someone’s fault, especially for someone who do wrong to us. In the book The Sunflower written by Simon Wiesenthal, a survivor of the Holocaust during World War II, he described his conflict with Karl, a dying Nazi soldier who killed many innocent Jews and begging for forgiveness for his outrageous crime at the end of his life. At the end of this sad and tragic episode, Simon did not response to Karl’s request directly; instead he left us a tough question: “What should you have done?” Based on what Karl had done during World War II and his repentance, each person might have their own point of view about where should we draw the line of forgiveness.
When the world looks at Canada, they typically see a (rare) benevolent force in world affairs. Unlike our southern neighbours, we are associated with kindness and compassion, not with vitriol and hate. Trudeau, who has admittedly rejuvenated such an image of Canada across the world, has now gone ahead and thrown it to the dogs. Instead of showing kindness and compassion for his fellow Canadian, John Ridsdel, he has instead decided to project hate for the Islamic terrorist group in the Philippines which held him hostage. In his attempt to display principled strength, Trudeau has not won anything.
Government oversight of big business (monopolies) and child labor were serious issues during the early 1900 's. Progressives were a group of reformers during these years that were fighting to "purify" the government, and eliminate political bosses and the corruption frequently connected with them. There were four main goals of the Progressives, fostering industrial efficiency, creating economic reform, promoting moral improvement, and protecting social welfare. The two Presidents that shared commitment to enacting these major social reforms were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt, through use of the Square Deal, promoted the conservation movement and placed millions of acres of land under federal protection to preserve America

The Progressive era was a period of widespread activism and political reform across the United States, from the 1900s to 1920s. The goal was to end abuse of power (monopolies, unfair privilege and corruption), and to replace corrupt power with humane institutions, apply scientific principles and efficient management to economic, social, and political institutions. Through the Progressive Era they were able to create the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th Amendment. The 16th Amendment allowed income tax, the 17th Amendment allowed the direct election of senators, the 18th Amendment allowed prohibition (prohibition is the manufacturing and sale of alcohol, especially in the US between 1920 and 1933), and the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.
3) In my opinion, I think the Canadian government should not obligate to intervene in other countries when the rights and freedoms of Canadians are infringed because they cannot interfere in current legal proceedings in other countries unless it is requested to do so by local authorities. The legal procedures may be different from the procedures in the Canadian legal system. If the person is involved in these proceedings, the person may face long delays in the effort to resolve their case. If the person’s international human rights are known to have been violated, the Government of Canada can try to put pressure on the foreign authorities to stand for their international human rights obligations and provide the person some protection.
The progressive era started with a change people who didn’t like how things were going. They felt the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, and they set out to change it. Roosevelt taking down big business. People having more time for themselves so more entertainment such as sports, and music. The smaller people standing together in union fighting for the rights.
We need to use compassion to forgive one another but can we forget the evil that has taken ahold of our society? As the Dalai Lama states remembering the past allows us to use this to bring peace for our future (DalaiLama, 129). If we forget our past there is no hope for our future. I believe allowing forgiveness allows evil to the ability to spread showing others that when you do wrong someone will forgive you and that allows it to be
The world’s second biggest country has received a similar second ranking in terms of being ranked the greatest country in the world. The country, of course, is Canada. Canada, for a long time, has been considered one of the best countries in the world to live in as it welcomes immigrants, has a rich diverse culture for every nationality, free medical expenses, and of course , the Niagara Falls. A quote from an article from the Toronto Star said, “….. [Canada] draws some of its national identity from its expansive wilderness, has pronounced a long list of accomplished writers and artists, and is a high-tech industrial society with a high standard of living.”
Morrie says that people should forgive others and make peace before they die so you don’t hold that grudge for ever. I believe what Morrie is saying is correct. Forgiveness shows strength because forgiving someone takes dedication, courage, and understanding. It takes a lot of thinking to make the right
Firstly, forgiveness is important to learn for one’s self in order to be happier, constructive, and for being able to forgive one’s self. Holding grudges against someone is not healthy. Avoiding, ignoring, or hurting someone because they hurt you or they made a mistake does not improve the situation both parties are in. Also, hating someone is not constructive. If one truly wants to make their situation better, they would either forgive or forget about what the other person did to wrong them.
The bible has a lot to say about the forgiveness of sins - the new testament is all about the work of Jesus Christ who was sent by God to suffer and die for just that reason. To help his followers understand the true nature of forgiveness, Jesus used two parables. These parables are the parable of the Unforgiving Servant, which teaches of God’s unlimited mercy and passing it forward, and the parable of the Prodigal Son, which teaches that repentance will always lead to God welcoming us back with open arms. Both of these parables relate to the sacrament of reconciliation - the humility required to ask for forgiveness, and God’s willingness to do so, to restore our relationship with Him.
