In 2003, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed. The purpose of PREA was to have a zero tolerance on individuals being sexually abused in state, federal, and local institutions. After reading the text we reveal that sexual assault is different between female and male, cause of rape, and the challenges that are faced due to sexual assault. Recently the numbers of juveniles being incarcerated has been growing drastically, and the same problems that are being seen in adult facilities are seen, but at lower numbers. “In male- only juvenile facilities, 5.7% of youth reported staff sexual misconduct, compared to 1.4% in female only facilities” (BJS). This can also be said not to be very accurate because, we don't know if every juvenile from facilities have been sexually abused and don't want to confess about an incident that occurred. There are a variety of reasons that male inmate facilities differ from female inmate facilities. First and foremost, there is a significant greater number of male offenders that are behind bars compared to females. “In 2016 there were 172,804 male inmates (93.2%) compared to 12,703 female inmates (6.8%)” (BOP.com). The importance of classification has a significant challenge in limiting the chances of certain individuals. There should be intensive supervision and a separation between the minority groups that are most likely to be victimized. There should also be mandatory programs for victims and offenders of sexual abuse. A challenge rape can bring to a correction facility is that inmates are sometimes unlikely to report due to the fear and embarrassment they feel. The correction facility must make it a priority to emphasis their concern of rape so individuals feel safe.
