Contradictory to what has been said, private prisons are not as safe as public prisons. Private prisons were created as a cost saving alternative, but this means the corners are being cut to provide these “savings”. Staff training at facilities are lower than the compared staff training at public facilities. Without the proper training, prison staff may not know how to properly defuse a situation or handle conflict. In turn, this can create a dangerous and deadly prison environment. When the population of a prison increases, the chances of inmates rioting increases. Overcrowding in prisons decreases the access to healthcare and increases the danger for staff as more people make it harder to keep order. By using private prisons, government prisons can send their overflow to keep the prison population at an acceptable amount and not go over their capacity. With increased populations, prisons may have to cut funding for programs which aide inmates on reentering the free world and not reoffending which causes them to come back to prison. To insure the programs are being effective, private prisons evaluate the programs and make changes so the programs offered provide the best services to the population they serve. Along with prisons, other private prison companies offer solutions to day reporting centers. These services provide cost savings to communities while still supporting released inmates so they can remain on the outside and thrive as citizens (https://www.geogroup.com/Non-Residential_Reentry). Private prison must give inmates food, shelter, and medical services as mandated by laws. By using both public and private prisons to deal with overcrowding, more resources can be used on inmates because there will be less people in a facility which make seeing medical staff easier.
