Persuasive Essay: Euthanasia
The right to life is a right we’re all familiar with, however, with this right, should we not be allowed to end our own lives if we choose? The controversy of euthanasia is one that has everyone’s ears buzzing. Doctors are concerned about what the outcome will be, as they are one of the first people immediately impacted by the law. Families with a loved one who wants to end their suffering are wondering how soon they’ll have to say goodbye. It’s a discussion we’re all part of.
Firstly, there are two distinct types of euthanasia, passive and active. Passive euthanasia involves withholding or withdrawing life-preserving procedures including water and food. Active euthanasia is when a person is intentionally killed to relieve pain. In Canada, passive euthanasia is legal, however, active euthanasia is prohibited as a form of culpable homicide. In June of 2016, Euthanasia will be legal across Canada.

When I see arguments against euthanasia, I wonder if the person has thought of the amount of pain and suffering that the patient and the patient’s loved ones go through. Euthanasia would only be possible for terminally ill patients who feel that their life isn’t worth living due to intolerable pain and/or loss of dignity and/or loss of capability. While the role of a doctor is to prolong life, heal and reduce suffering, in some cases it is impossible to do so. I feel that a doctor’s role is to do what is best for each patient, and sometimes that requires terminating a patient’s life upon their
