Assignment 5: Anita Hill VS Clarence Thomas Introduction In 1991, Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to serve on the nation’s highest court retired. However, before Thurgood Marshall could retire, someone would have to take his place. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court where he would eventually be sworn in on October 23, 1991 (EEOC); But before Clarence Thomas was sworn into the U.S. Supreme Court, a scandal involving a college law professor arose.
Chapter one, entitled "The College Essay Is an Argument", in "The Humble Argument" by Roy K. Humble states: that a proper college essay should be a cohesive, easy to understand dialog of contrasting views, that begins with a simple yet important question, and collection of evidence; then ends with a well thought out answer based on said evidence concluding with the student writer's personal thoughts and feeling about the question, the evidence, and the answer. Roy K. Humble concludes that if a student writer takes these necessary steps as part of their writing process they will most assuredly have written a complete argument, a true College
America’s founders created the constitution in order to create unification and order in the United States. However, there have been controversy surrounding the interpretation of the constitution, this has caused debate over many issues within the country. These issues and the lack of wartime policy within the constitution directly lead to the Civil War, which was one of the worst alterations this nation has faced. The Missouri compromise, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding Kansas were controversial issues surrounding the constitution that directly lead to the Civil War.
In 1846, Scott sued his and his family’s freedom, but was rejected by the Supreme Court 11 years later. The final ruling had an immense impact politically, economically and socially. (Bell. “Civil War on the Western Border”). Chief Justice Roger B. Taney wrote an opinion against Scott, which makes logical sense since he is a southerner.
The piece of writing which I felt was unsuccessful for me was the Rhetorical Analysis of an article relating to a topic from our course book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This piece of writing was difficult for me to organize my ideas around. The article that I decided to use for my rhetorical analysis highlighted mass incarceration among African American and the effect of civil liberties being are taken away from these individuals. I had a lot of repetition because many of the examples I used demonstrated more than one type of appeal. I found myself repeating what the purpose of the example was and how it demonstrated proper use of ethos, pathos, and logos.
How does a person make themselves more persuasive and trustworthy? The answer is rhetorical appeals. There are three main appeals that allow a person to be more persuasive and active in a speech or writing including pathos, logos, and ethos.
1) Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, the most challenging unit for me was the argument (persuasion) unit. I was surprised at how much I struggled both in the pre-writing process and in the writing process. To begin with, because I love arguments, I had trouble choosing a topic. In the end, I decided to challenge myself with the policy that requires sex offender to be added to a public registry policy. Instead of going with my initial stance (opposition), I decided to flip the scrip and argue the opposite of what I believe (proposition).
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
People rebel when no justice being served. It is understandable why people act a certain way. Have you ever loved someone more than yourself? A person is your biggest pride and joy to be safe? Can you imagine how it feels to no longer have your pride and joy with in a split second, due to the way they look?
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively. I believe that gaining this kind of insight on essay-writing is a reflection of improvement in my writing skills and overall

Exam 3 (Understanding the Essay) In what way do we convey ideas and arguments to others? Essays are our templates to discuss or argue a topic, and state supporting details and examples. The definition of an essay has changes through out the years.
The thesis on a persuasive paper should be a bit long and composed of two parts, claim and justification. The claim is how you are answering the question and the justification is why it is true. You need more than the thesis, because a thesis alone can not justify itself. That is why you have the three main arguments. When the question is a yes or no, you should explain why you chose your selection.
