Exam 3 (Understanding the Essay) In what way do we convey ideas and arguments to others? Essays are our templates to discuss or argue a topic, and state supporting details and examples. The definition of an essay has changes through out the years. People from the 18th century do not have the same concept of an essay as we do today. An essay in the 21st century would be more of a discussion on a topic and having supporting details to explain the message. Past centuries did not have a certain template for an essay, people wrote freely about what they vision or topics that weren’t discussed enough. Montaigne was successful on making a statement of what an essay is, and the philosophic skepticism of writing. He focused on bettering his self and not being caught up on what others thought of his writing. He reflected his past writings to see in what ways he had improved through out the years;” What I write here is not my teaching, but my study; it is not a lesson for others, but for me (Montaigne Pg. 1). Montaigne was noticed by other writers and readers, because he was one of the firsts that spoke their mind without fearing being judged. His tone of writing was portraying a sophisticated and settle motivational lessons that might help others. He was very descriptive and in depth with his writing because he knew his self and his capability of writing. “I am haunted with a faint suspicion that the essay will probably become rather more cogent and dogmatic, merely because of the deep and deadly divisions which ethical and economic problems may force upon us. But let us hope there will always be a place for the essay that is really an essay” (Chesterton Pg. 60). His suspicion came true now that in the 21st century we have templates for writing. Children are taught in school to write 5 paragraph essays. A few centuries ago there was not a perfect essay because everyone had a unique way of writing. He conveyed messages with examples and humored them when he had the chance. He gave examples of the way English school masters taught, and the way French taught their students.
