“Problem with Cell 13” Literary Essay Many people have overcome large problems. In “Problem with Cell 13” Futrelle shows us that with a belief that it can be done and a plan anything can be achieved. He also showed us that there is always more than one way to do things, whether the easy or difficult way. Problem with Cell 13 is a story about the Thinking Machine, a scientists nickname, who presents the idea of escaping from a lockdown prison cell in 7 days. In the story Futrelle conveys a message about overcoming the impossible through the dynamic character Doctor Ransome. He also conveys this message using his diction craft and literary devices. A dynamic character in Problem of Cell 13 is Doctor Ransome. Early in the story, Doctor Ransome is responsible for inquiring about the possibility of the Thinking Machine escaping from a prison cell. Doctor Ransome connects to the claim statement because he does not believe that the Thinking Machine can escape, obvious answer, the Thinking Machine believes he can do it which influences the outcome. Early in the story, Dr. Ransome was in disbelief- the inability or refusal to believe or to accept something as true of the Thinking Machine thinking out of the cell. On page, three it said, “Dr. Ransome was thoughtful for a moment as he smoked. "Well, say prison walls," he replied. "No man can think himself out of a cell. If he could, there would be no prisoners" (Futrelle 3). Dr. Ransome’s words are significant because it shows that he did not believe Dr. Ransome or anyone could think themselves out of a prison cell. Doctor Ransome begins to change in the story after the Thinking Machine escapes from the prison. Doctor Ransome changes internally from disbelief that he cannot escape to bewilderment after he escapes. On page 20 it reads, “Dr. Ransome and Mr. Fielding were amazed, but they did not know what the warden knew. They were only amazed; he was paralyzed” (Futrelle 20). Doctor Ransome’s change in view shows a valuable lesson that if you would show the devotion and energy toward the cause, anything is possible. Although the Thinking Machine did solve the puzzle, it took him almost a week to complete a task that could have been completed sooner, but Doctor Ransome did not help him and encourage him to solve the task.
