“They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized it,” smirks Matt Damon at one point of the new sci-fi blockbuster The Martian, “So, technically, I colonized Mars.” The fact is that Damon’s character astronaut, Mark Watney, who was left behind by his crew on Mars, has to survive by himself on a desert planet and successfully does so by growing potatoes. Indeed, the potato is a quite unpretentious crop to grow; therefore it is being produced ubiquitously throughout the world.
