A steroid is an organic compound with four rings arranged in a specific configuration and it has been known to help athletes achieve greater success in their sport. Steroids can be used in multiple ways such as for multiple health issues that include delayed puberty, cancer, A.I.D.S, or to simply become better at something like a sport. The use of steroids has been and still is very big in professional sports and the Olympics. Many professional athletes use steroids to get stronger in a certain area of the body. Steroids are very controversial in the world of professional sports because it is illegal to use them. Right off the bat, using steroids to better one’s performance is basically cheating. Steroid use is not very good for the player’s overall health and over the years, their bodies will most likely wear down. It takes away the love for the game whether it is baseball or football if one chooses to cheat. Donald M. Hooton, part of the Taylor Hooton Foundation said “Players who use anabolic steroids without a legitimate prescription are breaking the law” (Hooton). To consider the performance of a player who uses steroids equal to a player that doesn’t is plain out unfair. Therefore, the records set by steroid users shouldn’t even be considered in the record books due to their ability to outperform other average players’. A significant minority of players are concerned about the effects steroid use has on the sports record book stated in a survey done by USA TODAY and The Sports Xchange (Jenkins). After denying that he used steroids for many years, Armstrong finally admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs to help him win his Tour de France titles. After admitting to using the drugs he was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. He also had to give back the bronze medal he won in 2000 (Wilson). However, Armstrong wasn’t the only one stripped of their titles as cyclist Floyd Landis failed a drug test and his 2006 Tour de France title was taken away (Wilson).
