Being invited to the first Policy Planning course in the Middle East organized by the World Health Organization in 2010 opened my eyes to the world of public health. The broad scope of topics that fall into this field excited me as I see many opportunities that have the potential to benefit my country in terms of conducting research relevant to national and regional health challenges, engaging in public health interventions, fostering health studies so as to promote health literacy throughout the population, and advocating policies to protect and promote health.
With all my education and community experiences I found a major deficit in health knowledge in all sectors of Kuwait which I have tried to fulfill. However with the lack of this knowledge coupled with the lack of health management and policies in the country has lead us to become leaders in obesity, diabetes and other non communicable diseases which is placing a financial burden on our country.
I am acutely aware of my position as an educated Kuwaiti health professional, and this awareness sparked my interest in the status of Kuwait’s health, policy and advocacy issues. I believe policies and procedures are the link between the day-to-day operations of a country and the long term sustainability of that country. The Kuwaiti health sector is my main concern. I have been a Board Member in the Kuwait Nutrition Union since it was established in 2011 and continually fight to protect the rights of all workers in the nutrition field. In the future I plan to run for parliament in the Ministry of Health after I have gained adequate training and work experience with the ultimate career goal of promoting health through policy lobbying, educational programs and health awareness
