In Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler, the format of diary entries emphasizes Lauren's hyperempathy, which highlights the real world issues of gun violence. This book is written in an epistolary novel way, but the only difference is that in Lauren's perspective, we can feel the pain and emotions other people are feeling. It’s like a personal viewpoint but it is double the viewpoint part because of Lauren’s hyperempathy. Lauren views her hyperempathy as a weakness, but we the readers can see how it can be a strength in Lauren's world.

This may be harsher and help with punishing rather then correction. In a way, there is two approaches to this reform. Doctor Rivers showed various signs that he himself has some instability and a weakened mental health as he carries on through the hospital curing those who exhibited the signs of shell-shock. Doctor Rivers, silent and ready to listen, he listened to many horror stories, many tragedies, to help the soldiers overcome their deficiencies. Yet, no one was there to listen to Rivers, even if there was, he wouldn’t know where to begin. As Doctor Rivers helped overcome their mental illness’ you can’t help but to wonder how he continues his efforts to fix these soldiers, when he needs help fixing himself.

But, things seem to be all alright in the community, so why go changing things now? It is like the old saying “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” They have “drifted along all these years not doing anything about producing [their] own food and getting civilization back into some kind of running order” (Stewart 157). The usherance of the 21st century is heavy with expectation from the technological marvels presented in the last 100 years. From time machines, to sentient robots, to genetically enhanced humans, some of these marvels are much closer to reality than one might think. One such example, the autonomous car, has made leaps and bounds in improvement within the last decade. The current iteration of the autonomous car however, isn’t exactly smart. Sure, it may be able to drive to the location you tell it, and it may even have features like collision avoidance, or blind spot monitoring that manufacturers will market off as “highly intelligent” features.
