When describing professionalism the first thing that comes to mind is people in suits going to an office job that requires the most diligence and awareness; but being a professional does not fit just one stereo type. Anyone who applies themselves and makes an effort to learn to become a professional can and will achieve this goal. To be a professional you must attain certain strengths, behaviors and be able to be a role model to others to achieve professionalism- and anyone with the will to learn can achieve professionalism.

When you are doing your job as a PSW you are like the first liners in a war, you are the one that sees first hand anything that’s happening, you need to be able to notice changes in behavior and any physical changes and by listening and communicating with your patients you can find out so much more than just how they are doing in health bodily but not mentally; its best to communicate because you don’t want a patient to fall into depression when you could be there to help them out and I believe this is one of my strengths because I have always been able to listen to other peers problems and helped them out as much a I could to my abilities. Being able to empathize is also a huge strength to have when you’re dealing with the elderly population –but not limited to just them-, you need to be able to empathize with where they are in their life and what they are going through. For example, if you have a patient with a missing leg you would not be able to know exactly what it is like going through not having leg anymore, but when you empathize with a person you are able to understand what they are going through and that helps the person out by knowing that you are showing them compassion to them. I believe that my behavior influences other people’s perception of me to be a very bubbly but childish person, which can drive some people mad. There are times when I am told to “calm down” because my hyper active personality can be a bit to much at times for some people. I also joke around a lot because I like to make people smile and make myself happy but that can be a bad trait to have as a behavior for being a professional. To become a well rounded professional I believe I need to work on my behavior of joking around a lot because I am going into a profession that requires a very professional attitude and joking around a lot with patients and superiors would be a very huge do not do, but I believe that I will be able to improve this seeing as my job at this moment requires a certain amount of professionalism and I know I’m getting better at it- this is how I will be able to become a well rounded
