Biology, the study of life and living organisms, is complex and encompasses a multitude of theories and ideas. In AP Biology, the first unit covered was evolution. Chapters 29, 31, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43 in the textbook, Campbell’s Biology in Focus, not only discusses the four main ideas of biology: evolution, energy, information, and systems, but it also gives examples of each in order to help guide the reader’s understanding of the concepts. The first big idea of AP Biology is: “the process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.” Chapter 39 in the textbook encompasses this main idea through discussing natural selection and genetic diversity.

I think that the video, “How Evolution Works, Part 2” presented the case it was trying to make the best. I think that people cannot accept the theory of evolution if they only understand the contents of the Bible in a literal sense. I cannot accept much of the scientific knowledge currently in common use, not just evolution, but also when the earth was created. I think we can make a judgment that evolution and creationism are compatible by recognizing scientific facts and by how flexible the Bible is. Someone can ask if dinosaurs should come to the Bible if God made them.

Changes in terms of climate, weather and food availability are the driving forces for this type of natural selection. If shown on a graph, the population bell curve shifts either farther left or farther right, indicating that one trait, is favored over another for a species. An example of this type of natural selection is the beak length of the Galapagos finches, which changed through time due to changes in food availability. Those with larger and deeper beaks survived the scarcity of insects since they were able to crack seeds.

In this essay I will discuss Flanagan’s reasons for believing consciousness is an adaptation, I also will discuss why sleep is an adaptation and his stance on dreams being spandrels. And I will end with my opinion on why dreams may or may not be significant based on Flanagan’s theory and the treat simulation theory. Unilineal Evolution is the theory that societies evolve in a linear progression. At the beginning of the line of progression you have the least progressed societies or “savage” societies. At the mid-point of this line there are the “barbarian” societies and at the end of it is the “civilized” societies. There really are no strengths in Unilineal Evolution. Natural Selection Introduction: Natural Selection is the ability to survive and reproduce in a given environment. It is known due to evolution that has occurred over time and how mutation, migration, and genetic drift have changed. There is a variation in traits in animals, for example some birds have bigger beaks that can be used to feed on worms and bugs that are way underneath the river and lakes. Also there is a differential reproduction that occurs because not all animals can reproduce the same amount and there is a limit that the environment can support over time.
Natural selection only works on variations that are already within the organism (Linden 2016: lecture 2). For example, infanticides in gorillas. The infanticide genes are passed on and this bad trait just kept getting passed on until the non infanticide species are gone or extinct and eventually these infanticides gorillas will eventually kill off its own kind. Also as the population of individuals with higher fecundity increase, their demand for resources also increases which could lead to the depletion of resources, therefore leading to the end of their existence. As each new “missing link” was found, there are numerous other gaps that have to be found, so it keeps on going because scientist find new species every time they look for “missing links” to fill in the gap. The relationship between gaps and fossils is that there will always be missing patterns that lead up to the final or current species.
Depending on the conditions of the environment, the organisms may pass down selected traits to their offspring. These selected traits will allow for the next generation to better adapt and survive longer ["Natural Selection and Speciation - Biology."]. One example of evolution through the process of natural selection is that of the Viceroy butterfly. The Viceroy butterflies were facing extinction a little more than 100 years ago due to their inability to protect themselves or hide from their predators; mainly birds.
