Throughout the American 1960’s there was a Civil Rights Movement. This movement gained a lot of traction within a short amount of time through many people. There were two leaders with opposing tactics but had the same goal reined in the movement. One leader was Martin Luther King with the tactic of Nonviolent Civil Disobedience and integration. The second leader was Malcolm X with the tactic to fight back and to have the communities better themselves by being separate.
From the mid-60s and until the 70s, more liberal new laws were passed than any other period since FDR’s liberalism wave. However, liberalism was under attack from two directions. In one hand, civil rights activists were impatient and unsatisfied with civil rights progress. These young activists were not only disapproving the “slow” civil right progress or the war in Vietnam, but they were also refusing anything linked in the cold war liberalism.
During the 1950s and 1960s, America was a stormy place to reside in. There were many major events that occurred, including the the rise and fall of two major leaders in the African American community, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. During this time period, America was involved in the Cold War, along with the war in Vietnam, and the Civil Rights Movement. In the Civil Rights Movement, two very influential men had two very different ways in which the country should be integrated.
Two things grew in the 1960s: peace and violence. The civil rights movement gained momentum in the 1960’s, bringing change with it. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr emerged as two powerful activists. Both activists had very different philosophies, one preached a non-violence method, and the other thought violence was a necessary action to bring change. During the civil rights movement, Malcolm X’s philosophy made the most sense because he wanted to improve the lives of every black American, he believed that the government wasn’t doing enough for colored people, and he thought violence was necessary to bring a change.
The 1920s was a time of development for America as a whole; the Progressive Era was in full swing due to the rapid American Industrialization and the change in traditional thought processes. Progressive reformers at this point in history were working towards familiarizing the nation with new beliefs, contrary to those of traditional ways of life. The newfound concept of progressivism was perpetuated due to the increase of media throughout the country - it was stated that, “The 1920s was a decade of change, when many Americans owned cars, radios, and telephones for the first time,” (“1920s: A Decade of Change”). The sources of media were expanding, thus the reach of media and news was able to spread nationwide - people from all over the country

The muckrakers did a wonderful job reveling the secrets of the progressive era.
The Progressive Movement was an effort to cure the many ailments that plagued American society. The frontier had been tamed, great cities and businesses developed, and territories across the globe had been conquered, but not all citizens shared in this new found wealth, prestige, and optimism. With the great spurt of industrial growth in the last quarter of the 19th century, agriculture was not the great driving force it once was for the American economy. This alienated a vast majority of the midwestern towns, which could include Spoon River, whose livelihood would have likely been depended on the cultivation of crops. In an attempt to try and recapture the pureness of simpler times many turned to religion.
During the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement was making its mark on the Unites States history. The Civil Rights movement was not just one single movement it included the feminist movement, gay/lesbian movement, the disability movement, and the Chicano/a movement. Activists wanted change and equality for its people. For example, the feminist movement wanted to be able to divorce and work a job. It was a time for change throughout the United States.
After the Civil War, our country was battered and beaten, but it rebuilt itself over time and spread its policies, as well as manufacturing practices, throughout our country. Early in the 20th century, members of our nation started to look at some of these practices and policies and began to question their merit and whether they assisted our population or not. Many people were involved in the progressive movement in America from the presidents to a slew of popular authors and photographers. The one thing that they had in common was that they saw problems with how various industries in our nation performed that they knew needed to be fixed. They did not always agree on everything, such as immigration, but they always had the nation’s best interest at heart.
Media Diet Analysis Summary Before recording all of my media exposure I knew that the amount of time I spend with different types of media is a longer amount of time than it probably should be. Surprisingly though, I had about the same amount of media exposure on the weekday and the weekend day, the difference being from thirteen hours and sixteen minutes on the weekday to my weekend day exposure of thirteen hours and fifty-five minutes. Progressivism was a reform movement that began during the end of the 19th century and continued through the first couple decades of the 20th century. During this time, many writers, politicians, and social welfare advocates came forward as leaders of the Progressive movement and sought to solve societal problems that were caused by capitalism and the Industrial Revolution. While these Progressives often differed in what they saw as America’s main problem and how it could be fixed, they shared the common belief that in order for the reforms to work, the government needed to take the lead, be actively involved in the reforms, and be more democratic. The progressive movement was formed with an effort of cure to all the ills which had developed in the United States during the time of industrial growth in the last quarter of 19th century. The Progressive Era aimed at reforming the conditions for all workers and also to humanize how prisoners and mentally ill people were being treated. Another reform effort was during the period of reconstruction which lasted up to the time that America entered into the First World War. The reform was to address the issues of women rights and the temperance movement during the Progressive Era (Fox & Picillo, 2016).
In the beginning of the twentieth century and end of the nineteenth century, a new era began known as progressivism. America was quickly evolving through industrialization and urbanization and immigrants were flooding to America; thus, many citizens believed that their society had brought about issues that needed to be improved (Brinkley, 565). Reformers from this era brought about valid debates over “the appropriate role of women in society, the proper way to deal with racial difference, the best way to govern cities, the fairest way to organize the economy, the role of political parties and machines in public life, the degree to which the state should impose moral norms on communities and individuals, the way society should respond to immigration
Following the economically successful post-WWII period, the 1960s decade was characterized by the upheaval of American norms at the time. No longer would various groups of people conform to the legislation and social norms of the United States. The Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement best illustrated this resistance against the status quo. Although these movements were made up of similar people, their tactics were immensely different. The Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement provided a foundation for student activism on college campuses.
