Prohibition was a provincial law that was established in Canada that thus forbids the manufacture,sale and consumption of alcohol. Prohibition failed because Canadians were not ready for a drought after the tough times of war. It was the social norm to kick back in the 20’s and have a drink after a long day of hard work. The war just ended, people are getting settled in back to their labour jobs and drinking with your friends is what these good hard working people did to relax. They feel like they deserved it, they just came back from being a hero for their country, It was a personal reward that they felt they deserved. The Moderation League believed that fishermen and miners should not be denied the opportunity of the stimulant as he feels he may require (Document 1). These men were good hard working men that provided for their family.They only had 1 demand,to be able to have a drink, and the government did not believe that they were deserving of their beverage.These men just came back from fighting for personal liberty and now the government wants to take it away from them. Capt Ian McKenzie stated that at least 75 percent of the male adults of the Province had been guilty of infractions of the Prohibition laws.,this was ample proof that the act was making criminals out of decent men (Document 2). Prohibition failed because these men believed that the real criminals were the government who were taking away what these men worked hard for. Their personal morals outweighed the petty laws that were set by the government and allowed people to break the rules of this non-sense Prohibition. During the first year of operation the sales of of liquor by the Quebec government reached a total of 15,000,000(Document 4).This shows that people were against the idea of prohibition and that is why it failed. They wanted to continue the party after the victorious war but the government showed up and tried to disperse the party. There is always 2 arguments for a law,for and against.When it comes to the groups who were against,they were devastated when their efforts to keep prohibition failed.The catholic Church is not,never has been,and never will be opposed to Temperance and self abstinence(Document 6). They believe that alcohol is considered a sin and you will go to hell if you consume it outside of the communion ceremony.Their strong beliefs were not in accordance with the majority of the population which resulted in the abolition of prohibition only a few years later,depending on which province you lived in. False prophecies also allowed people not to believe in the so called purity that swept over our
