Prohibition in the 1920’s. People should have the freedom to make their own choices and they are responsible for their actions. The prohibition of alcohol in the United States in 1920 was a contentious issue that highlighted the tension between personal freedoms and societal well-being. Women played a big role in the ban on alcohol. They did not like the behavior a lot of men had because of alcohol. There was a group called the “noble experiment”. They believed in the ban on alcohol because they thought it would solve things like alcoholism, crime, poverty, unemployment, and domestic violence. This is where the idea of prohibition came in. Along with the people who followed the temperance movement, most women supported the ban of alcohol. Eliza Steward said “No power on Earth. has such influence to terrorize and make cowards of men as the power of liquor.” A lot of people still wanted to drink so they would find ways around the new laws. These people would make homemade alcohol called “moonshine” and “Bathtub Gin”. Some people would get around the law by getting doctors to say that they needed to drink for a medical condition. This is what our country went through about two years ago when marijuana was illegal. Most people that wanted it would get it medically so it was not illegal for them to have. People called bootleggers would smuggle alcohol into places by hiding alcohol in flasks and putting it in the leg of their boots. Some bootleggers would even smuggle alcohol from the Caribbean or Canada. It had a big impact on society and more average people started breaking laws.
