Prohibition, I’m sure most of you have heard this word before, but do you really know what it means? Well, today i'm here to inform you and tell you all about prohibition and how it affected the pastime of America. In 1920 a Constitutional Act was put into play, called prohibition. Prohibition was the illegalization of alcohol in the United States of America. This ban lasted from 1920-1933, known as the prohibition. Many outraged about this, protest and other rebellious actions took place to try and overthrow the prohibition, or just break the law.

The ban on alcohol started in 1920 and lasted until 1933. There were many ways you could have gotten in trouble involving alcohol. The 18th amendment did not illegalize the consumption of alcohol, which many people think. It only held a ban on the manufacturing, transportation and sale of any alcoholic beverage. This outraged people, it has thought to be the only time in American history that rights and freedoms have been broken or taken away.

In New York alone, there were 30,000 to 100,000 “speakeasy” clubs. A “speakeasy” was a bar or nightclub that secretly served alcohol. Lots of dangerous Mobsters loved these places, as famous ones such as, Al Capone, made it almost a hangout for them and their crew of gangsters. These bars were not always open to the public. Most of the time you had to have some kind of wealth or connection to get into these especially in bigger cities. As i mentioned before, one of the most famous gangsters of all of histor hung out at one of these “speakeasy” bars. The Green Mill Lounge is where famous American gangster Al Capone hangout. The bar was very secretive and had a list of tunnel connection to it for Capone to sneak criminals, alcohol and other stuff in and out of New York
