Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes Essay

1652 Words7 Pages

A cell is a basic unit of life, without cells there would be no life on earth. Cell are building block of all living things without cells there would be no life on earth. The first living cell was discovered by a Dutch microscopist Antonie Van Leenuwenhoek(1632-1723). The are two types of cells namely prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Both eukaryotes and prokaryotes were first introduced by a Frenchman Edouard Chatton in 1938. Prokaryote is a unicellular organism that lacks the nucleus and other membranous organelles. The prokaryotes consist of a plasma membrane which controls what enters and exit the cell, within a nucleus there is a genetic material. The is also a cytoplasm present which contain ribosomes which play a role of synthesizing proteins. Prokaryotes are diverse in structure and metabolic capabilities, they consist of a cell wall which …show more content…

One of the common shapes include cocci and rods. Cocci can form clusters, chains and pairs. Those in pairs are known as diplococci, and those in chains Streptococci, and in clusters Staphylococci. They have unique shapes some are branched such as Thermoproteus tenax. Archaea do not have a layer of peptidoglycan. Some lack a cell wall, many archaea use flagella for movement. The archaea have two lipids namely glycerol ether lipids and diglycerol tetraether lipids. The have species identified as gram positive and gram negative using the procedure of gram staining. These domains as different from one another form from eukaryotes. As in the 1980s and 1990s the phylogenic analyses suggested that archaea and eukaryotes shared a recently present common ancestor. Twenty years comparing genetic material of eukaryotes and prokaryotes are changing gradually which means they are evolutionary. They have signals within them which have a high level of complexity which makes its difficult to compare them. This supports the hypothesis proposed by James Lakes eocyte first proposed in
