Some reasons Lincoln might have decided to attend the theater are because his wife wanted to go, he needed a break from work, or he wanted to celebrate the Union victory. “This event, Mary decides, is something not to be missed,” this is stated in chapter 22 and it tells us that it is important so Lincoln doesn't want to miss it. It also says, “ By this time, Lincoln is overdue at the War Department. He also Has a cabinet meeting scheduled in just over an hour,” which means he had and still has a ton of work to do from the war ending. If he decided not to go or to bring more security then he could have lived and maybe changed our world for better or for worse.
